US Confirms Exemption of Afghan SIV Holders from Travel Ban, Ensures Continued Visa Processing

Washington D.C., June 12, 2025 Afghan nationals holding Special Immigrant Visas (SIV) have been officially exempted from the US travel ban, according to a statement from the US State Department. The clarification ensures that Afghan SIV applications will continue to be processed without disruption at all US embassies and consulates globally.

This exemption has brought much-needed relief to thousands of Afghans awaiting resettlement, particularly those who had assisted US missions during its two-decade presence in Afghanistan.

Key Details of the Announcement

  • Exemption Status: Afghan SIV holders are not affected by the travel ban imposed via executive order by former President Donald Trump, which included restrictions for citizens from 12 countries.
  • Consular Processing: According to State Department spokesperson Timmy Bruce, as cited by Khaama Press on June 10, the SIV application process remains active and uninterrupted at all US diplomatic missions worldwide.

“Consular processing of Afghan SIV applications is proceeding uninterrupted at all US embassies and consulates,” Bruce said during a press briefing.

Purpose of the Afghan SIV Program

The Afghan Special Immigrant Visa program was originally established to provide protection for local Afghan allies, including:

  • Interpreters
  • Embassy staff
  • Military contractors

These individuals had worked closely with US forces and institutions and are considered to be at heightened risk of persecution following the US military withdrawal from Afghanistan.

International Reactions and Human Rights Concerns

Human rights organizations have welcomed the exemption, stating that it is a critical step in upholding international obligations to protect those who directly supported US efforts.

With the ongoing instability in Afghanistan and the resurgence of extremist groups such as ISIS, experts emphasize the importance of maintaining strong and safe resettlement pathways for vulnerable Afghans.

Security Context in Afghanistan

During the same briefing, when asked about the increased ISIS activity under Taliban governance, Bruce declined to comment, stating that there were no specific updates available at the time.

This follows a recent claim by the Taliban that it had killed two alleged ISIS fighters in Kabul, in an effort to demonstrate control over internal security threats.
