Israel Launches Major Airstrikes on Iran's Nuclear and Military Sites Under Operation Rising Lion

 June 13, 2025 |

In a dramatic escalation of tensions in the Middle East, Israel launched a series of preemptive airstrikes early Friday morning on Iranian nuclear and military facilities, marking one of the most significant military operations in the region in decades. The offensive, code-named Operation Rising Lion, targeted key infrastructure across Tehran and other areas, including Iran’s main uranium enrichment site at Natanz.

According to Israeli officials, the strikes were launched to counter what they described as an “imminent threat” from Iran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program. Speaking to the media, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared the operation a necessity for Israel's national survival and stated it would “continue for as long as needed.”

High-Profile Casualties and Strategic Targets

Among the casualties was Major General Hossein Salami, chief of Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), whose death was confirmed by Iranian state media. Additionally, two nuclear scientists—Fereydoun Abbasi and Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi—were also reported killed. Iranian authorities claim that several civilians, including children, also lost their lives in the strikes, particularly in residential areas of Tehran.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that Iran’s uranium enrichment facility at Natanz was among the sites hit, and said it is monitoring radiation levels closely.

Reactions from Iran and the International Community

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei condemned the attack, calling it a “wicked crime” and warned Israel of “bitter and painful consequences.” Iranian officials have vowed retaliation, with the Revolutionary Guard releasing statements promising revenge.

As a precaution, both Iran and Israel have closed their airspace, and Israel has declared a state of emergency. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz warned citizens to brace for incoming missile and drone attacks from Iran and urged them to follow guidance from civil defense authorities.

Global Diplomatic Response

The United States, while distancing itself from the operation, reiterated that it had no involvement in the strikes. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that America’s priority remains the protection of its forces in the region, and the White House confirmed ongoing monitoring of the situation.

In Washington, President Donald Trump—whose administration had cautioned against escalation—said he had urged Israel to delay any military action while nuclear negotiations continued. Trump is expected to hold a National Security Council meeting to address the developments.

Meanwhile, countries such as Australia, China, and Oman have expressed concern. Oman, which has been mediating U.S.-Iran nuclear talks, condemned the Israeli attack as a “reckless escalation” and urged for international intervention to de-escalate tensions.

Strategic and Political Implications

Netanyahu’s government insists that Iran has accumulated enough enriched uranium for multiple nuclear weapons. Israel’s long-standing policy has been to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear-armed state. The Israeli Air Force reportedly used long-range capabilities to reach targets deep within Iranian territory, possibly using standoff missiles launched over neighboring airspace.

However, critics suggest the timing of the operation may also serve to divert attention from Israel’s ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has entered its 20th month and faces growing domestic criticism.

At the same time, global oil prices surged, with Brent crude rising nearly 8%, reflecting market anxiety over broader regional instability.

What’s Next?

Both nations now stand on high alert, with Israel’s Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir stating that “tens of thousands of soldiers” have been deployed across all borders. Iran’s next move remains uncertain, but analysts warn that any retaliation could trigger a broader military confrontation involving regional and international actors.

The Middle East is once again at the crossroads of conflict and diplomacy, and the coming days will be crucial in determining whether escalation can be contained—or if it marks the beginning of a new and dangerous chapter in regional hostilities.
