Indian Railways Tatkal Ticket Booking Rules 2025: Aadhaar Authentication Made Mandatory, New Confirmed Ticket Policy on Trial

In a major update that will impact millions of train travelers, Indian Railways has announced new Tatkal ticket booking rules effective from July 1, 2025, making Aadhaar authentication compulsory for all users booking tickets through the IRCTC website or mobile application. Additionally, the Railway Ministry has launched a pilot project to notify waiting list passengers 24 hours in advance about their confirmed ticket status — a move aimed at improving passenger experience and journey planning.

Key Highlights of Indian Railways' New Tatkal Ticket Booking Rules 2025

Mandatory Aadhaar Authentication from July 1, 2025

Starting July 1, 2025, only passengers who have completed Aadhaar authentication will be able to book Tatkal tickets through the IRCTC website or app. This move is designed to ensure that the benefits of the Tatkal scheme reach genuine passengers, limiting misuse and improving transparency.

OTP-Based Aadhaar Verification from July 15, 2025

From July 15, 2025, passengers booking Tatkal tickets will be required to undergo an additional Aadhaar-linked OTP verification step during the booking process. This dual-layer verification is expected to enhance the security and authenticity of Tatkal bookings.

Restrictions on Authorized Agents

The Railway Ministry has also introduced a new restriction for IRCTC-authorised ticketing agents. These agents will not be allowed to book Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the booking window:

  • 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM for air-conditioned (AC) classes
  • 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM for non-AC classes

The Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) and IRCTC have been directed to implement the necessary technological changes and coordinate with all zonal railway divisions to ensure a smooth rollout.

Confirmed Ticket Update for Waiting List Passengers: 24-Hour Notification Pilot Launched

In a move that could significantly reduce travel uncertainty, Indian Railways has begun a pilot project to inform passengers about confirmed ticket status 24 hours before train departure. Currently, confirmation updates are provided just 4 hours before departure, which often causes inconvenience to those on the waiting list.

Pilot Launched in Bikaner Division

According to Dilip Kumar, Executive Director (Information and Publicity) of the Railway Board, the trial is currently being conducted in the Bikaner Division. If the response from passengers is positive, the system will be expanded and integrated into broader railway policy.

Cancellation Penalties Remain

It is important to note that cancellation penalties for confirmed tickets remain unchanged:

  • Cancellation between 48 to 12 hours before departure: 75% of the fare is forfeited
  • Cancellation between 12 to 4 hours before departure: 50% of the fare is forfeited

Passengers are advised to plan their travel accordingly, as confirmed tickets are non-refundable after chart preparation.

Why These Changes Matter

These changes are part of Indian Railways’ ongoing effort to:

  • Improve the efficiency and security of Tatkal bookings
  • Curb ticketing malpractice
  • Enhance user convenience, especially for last-minute travelers
  • Provide clarity to waiting list passengers well in advance
  • Encourage more transparent use of the reservation system

By implementing Aadhaar-based authentication, Indian Railways aims to prioritize genuine travelers and reduce bulk bookings by agents. Meanwhile, the 24-hour confirmation pilot ensures that passengers can better plan alternative travel or accommodations if their tickets are not confirmed.

What Passengers Should Do Now

  • Ensure your IRCTC account is linked with Aadhaar and complete the authentication process before July 1, 2025.
  • Be prepared for an OTP verification step from July 15 onwards.
  • If you usually rely on ticketing agents, consider booking directly through IRCTC platforms during the first 30 minutes of Tatkal window openings.
  • Monitor IRCTC updates for any changes to the 24-hour confirmation pilot, especially if you're traveling from or to Bikaner and surrounding areas.
