June 26, 2025 – U.S. President Donald Trump has launched a scathing attack on Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic Socialist who appears to have won the Democratic primary for New York City mayor, calling him a "100% Communist Lunatic" and mocking his appearance.

Mamdani, a 33-year-old state assemblyman and the son of Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair, declared victory in the Democratic mayoral primary Tuesday night after former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo conceded the race.
President Trump, reacting to the upset, took to his social media platform to unleash a barrage of insults. "It's finally happened, the Democrats have crossed the line. Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor," Trump wrote.
He continued, launching personal attacks on Mamdani's demeanor and intelligence: "We've had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous. He looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he's not very smart, he's got AOC+3, Dummies ALL, backing him, and even our Great Palestinian Senator, Cryin' Chuck Schumer, is groveling over him.
Mamdani's campaign centered on highly progressive policies aimed at addressing New York City's cost of living crisis, including proposals for rent freezes on stabilized units, free city buses, city-owned grocery stores, and universal childcare, to be funded by a significant tax increase on businesses and wealthy residents.
Republicans and conservative media have quickly seized on Mamdani's victory, attempting to portray him as the new face of the Democratic Party's leftward shift, a narrative they believe will damage moderate Democrats in upcoming elections. Some conservative activists have even linked Mamdani to sensitive historical events and questioned his faith, though without basis.
Despite the personal nature of Trump's attacks, Mamdani's supporters view his win as a monumental moment for progressive politics, demonstrating the electoral viability of left-wing policies even against well-funded, establishment opponents. If elected in November, Mamdani would be the youngest New York City mayor in over a century and its first Muslim and Indian American mayor.
The general mayoral election in November is now set to become a national spectacle, with Mamdani likely facing incumbent Mayor Eric Adams (who is running as an independent) and Republican Curtis Sliwa, and potentially even Andrew Cuomo again if he decides to run as an independent.
