Tata Advanced Systems & Dassault Aviation sign deal to manufacture Rafale jet fuselages in Hyderabad. First production outside France to begin by FY2028.
India to Manufacture Rafale Fighter Jet Fuselages: Tata & Dassault Aviation Sign Historic Pact
In a groundbreaking move for India’s aerospace and defence sector, Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Dassault Aviation have entered into a strategic partnership to manufacture complete Rafale fighter jet fuselages in India. This is the first time Rafale fuselages will be produced outside France, signifying a historic shift and a major milestone in India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.
The four Production Transfer Agreements signed between the two companies mark a massive investment in India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem. As part of the agreement, Tata will set up a state-of-the-art facility in Hyderabad, which will become a global hub for high-precision aerospace manufacturing.
Production Timeline and Capacity
The Hyderabad plant is expected to begin production by FY2028, with the capability to deliver up to two complete fuselage units per month. These fuselage units include key structural components such as:
- Lateral shells of the rear fuselage
- Complete rear and central sections
- Forward fuselage section
This major development strengthens India’s position in the global aerospace supply chain and supports long-term goals of economic self-reliance (AtmaNirbhar Bharat).
Leadership Remarks
Eric Trappier, Chairman and CEO of Dassault Aviation, emphasized the importance of this partnership:
“This is a decisive step in strengthening our supply chain in India. With Tata Advanced Systems as a key partner, we are confident in meeting our quality and competitiveness requirements globally.”
Sukaran Singh, CEO and MD of TASL, echoed the sentiment:
“The production of the complete Rafale fuselage in India reflects the trust in Tata Advanced Systems’ capabilities. It also highlights the tremendous growth of India’s aerospace manufacturing ecosystem.”
What Is a Fuselage?
The fuselage is the central body of an aircraft that holds everything together—cockpit, passengers, cargo, and often fuel. For a fighter aircraft like the Rafale, the fuselage must be streamlined and robust, supporting high-speed, high-maneuverability operations.
According to NASA, the fuselage is a long, hollow tube designed for strength and low weight. It plays a critical role in aerodynamics and structural integrity.
Strategic Importance
This collaboration is not only a manufacturing boost but a strategic win for India’s defence preparedness. It will:
- Enhance domestic manufacturing capabilities in defence aviation
- Create high-skill job opportunities in the Hyderabad region
- Strengthen India's position as a global aerospace supplier
- Support the Indian Air Force and export potential of the Rafale platform
TASL’s existing expertise in aerostructures, defence systems, and unmanned platforms positions it as a key player in India’s ambition to become a leading aerospace manufacturing nation.
