President Murmu Urges Cost Accountants to Champion Sustainability for 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047

 India – June 23, 2025 President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, today underscored the pivotal role of cost and management accountants in shaping India's economic future, urging them to embrace environmental sustainability as a core principle for achieving the vision of a 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India) by 2047.

Gracing the National Students' Convocation of the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI) in New Delhi, President Murmu addressed a gathering of aspiring professionals and seasoned experts. She highlighted that accountants have historically enjoyed high esteem in society, as "accounting and accountability are deeply connected."



The President lauded ICMAI, founded in 1944, for its crucial role in India's economic transformation. "Not only a witness, in fact, it has been a very crucial player in making the Indian economy one of the strongest in the world today," she remarked, acknowledging their often "away from the limelight" but significant contributions to industrial growth and policymaking.

Sustainability: "No Longer a Slogan, But a Necessity"

A key focus of her address was the urgent need for corporate organizations to integrate environmental considerations into their financial models. "The world is facing the crisis of climate change," President Murmu stated emphatically. "Sustainability is no longer a slogan; it has become a necessity."

She challenged the traditional singular pursuit of profit, asserting, "That time is over when corporate organizations worked solely with the profit motive. Now they have to keep the environmental costs in mind. And this is where CMAs [Cost and Management Accountants], with their skills, can bring about a great change in the future of the planet."

Accountants as Nation-Builders for Viksit Bharat

President Murmu advised the graduating students that their responsibilities extend far beyond traditional financial accounting. "As cost accountants, you are uniquely positioned to contribute to India's transformation into a Viksit Bharat by 2047," she urged. She expressed confidence that the education imparted by ICMAI would enable them to become not only successful professionals but also dedicated nation-builders.

The President's address reinforces the government's broader vision for a developed India that balances robust economic growth with environmental responsibility and social progress, positioning professionals like cost accountants as vital partners in this national endeavor.
